Adopt Nerino

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

At the end of August 2025, Paola informed us that another rescue dog had arrived at her place: Nerino. Here is his sad story: Nerino once had an owner, a real home. When the owner died, none of the children wanted to take the small dog. They gave him to a young man. And what was to be expected happened: Nerino escaped at the first opportunity and set off back to his former home. Unfortunately, he didn't make it - he probably had a car accident, and he was found badly injured on the road. He was taken to a veterinary clinic, where a serious spinal injury was diagnosed. His hind legs were paralyzed, and it was clear that the little guy would now be incontinent. Naturally, no one wanted him anymore. But the friendly, loving dog wasn't going to be euthanized in the clinic either. And so the call for help reached our partners in Stintino ... Nerino now lives among the other dogs and cats and is cared for according to his needs: his bladder is manually expressed three times a day, as he cannot urinate on his own. The feces are usually passed during one of these actions or sometimes spontaneously without further assistance. During our project tour in September, we met Nerino in person, and we immediately took the little guy to our hearts. Despite his disability, he radiates so much joy of life that you simply have to love him. We brought along a used wheelchair, which Nerino immediately rushed off in. However, the wheelchair was too small and too light and also not suitable for the rough terrain near Paola. But through the test, we knew that a proper wheelchair would be exactly what Nerino needs to improve his quality of life. We had already reported about this in our travel journal, and we estimated that a suitable wheelchair would cost around 450 to 550 euros. The cost estimate is now available, and we had guessed well: a wheelchair adapted to Nerino's needs, including an additional harness, will cost about 550 euros. Nerino has now traveled to his German foster home. If you would like to provide Nerino with a suitable wheelchair, you can find more information on the rescue dog page. If Nerino touches your heart and you would like to give him a home despite his handicap, that would make us very happy. We place dogs throughout Germany.

About Nerino

What life with Nerino looks like

Nerino is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nerino, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nerino?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nerino on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nerino if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nerino already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nerino isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nerino and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
