Adopt Nico

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Nico is a very lovable Strubbelpodenco who has been in our partner shelter, Hogar de Asis, since 2020 and patiently and modestly awaits a wonderful home, with people who will take him by the scruff of the neck and show him the sunny sides of life. Back then, he was found tied to the shelter entrance in the middle of a blazing hot afternoon by our animal protection partner Tere when she came to feed the animals. Therefore, we have no information about his past, but it seems not to have been good, because Nico was long very fearful, which is why he has been waiting with us for many years. He lived in the yard with various other dogs, lastly with his great love Nata, a fearful light-colored herding dog. Unfortunately, Nata died in the summer of 2025 due to a fire, which broke Nico's heart, causing him to stop eating. Therefore, Tere went to the Perrera to get a new yard partner for him, and the "blind date" matched perfectly from the very first moment. Today, he lives with Diva, also a light-colored herding dog. Since Diva is very people-oriented and cuddly, it has had a positive effect on Nico, and he has made further positive developments in trust-building with her help. His basic character is always submissive and likable, but we are sure that Nico is now ready to open up to new people and a better life situation. In a home environment with a regulated daily routine, he can build up more self-confidence and joy in life, so he is looking for a home or, if necessary, a foster home with a heart and mind for animal protection dogs with a past, who will walk the path with him.

About Nico

What life with Nico looks like

Nico is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
