Nika

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 8 years

Nika is a nine-year-old mixed breed dog who came to us as a result of a seizure. Unfortunately, we don't know much about her past. What we do know about her: Nika is a very friendly, intelligent and pleasant dog who still has a lot of joy in life. Nika is well-behaved, knows basic commands, is house-trained and doesn't destroy things. She approaches people openly and friendly and is very happy about attention and time spent together. She also enjoys cuddling very much. At the same time, Nika can calm down well and, due to her age, doesn't need to be constantly occupied. Nika is enthusiastic about going outside. She loves going for walks and enjoys exploring her surroundings and doing things with her people. At the moment, she still pulls quite strongly on the leash. However, we assume that this will improve with regular, suitable exercise and training. Nika has been diagnosed with severe spondylosis. Therefore, we are looking for people who will primarily exercise her intellectually and find activities with her that are suitable for her body. Long or physically strenuous tours are not necessary for her - Nika also has a clever head that wants to be occupied. We wish for Nika a quiet, ground-level home, ideally with a garden. She loves lying in the sun outside and just being relaxed. A quiet residential area would also be nice for her. Nika knows children and gets along with them, but they should be a bit older and more quiet due to her age and need for rest. Nika gets along well with other dogs. It would be especially nice if she could move into a new home with Captain, with whom she gets along well. However, this is not a requirement. We can imagine both a classic home and a long-term care placement for Nika. The most important thing to us is that she finds people who understand her needs, provide her with a quiet environment and still enjoy spending time with an intelligent and interested dog. Despite her spondylosis, Nika still has so much joy in walks, closeness and joint activities. Now all she needs is a home where she can spend her twilight years.

DE·Show original

About Nika

What life with Nika looks like

Nika is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
