Niko

Male · Senior · 9 years

Niko is an energetic mixed breed dog, clearly showing his shepherd dog heritage in his behavior. Despite his age, he is full of energy and joy, as evident from his constant wagging tail. Niko was taken in as a result of an intervention, as he was in poor health and his owner did not provide him with veterinary care. He has now gained weight and regained his energy while in the shelter. On walks, he is very lively - he will run up to sniff a bush, and then come back to his caregiver for a toy or treat. When he is excited, he may pull on the leash, but he can also walk calmly. He digs in the sand, runs, and above all loves wrestling with a rope toy and playing with a ball, which he demands. In the rooms, once he has thoroughly sniffed everything, he will curl up on the couch with his human. He then does not mind being scratched behind the ears or on the rump. Niko should go to a home with a small amount of stairs, and his future owner should be aware of his health condition and how to care for him.

PL·Show original

Aktualnie w schronisku ładnie przytył i odzyskał energię.

About Niko

What life with Niko looks like

Niko is a large senior dog waiting at Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu in Poznan.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Niko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Niko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Niko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Niko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Niko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Niko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Poznaniu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Niko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
