Oakley

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 21 years

Feb 2024 Oakley is a very handsome 21/2 year old boy who was gifted to his owners at 5 months because he was too much for his original owners and the breeder couldn’t help. It seemed the ideal home being a farm with land, company, other dogs, horses etc. Oakley is wonderful with all the small animals such as ducks and chickens, also great with his best friends the sheep and not bothered by horses, he’s wonderful with their dogs both large and small, males and females. Oakley is also perfect with the families children ranging from 3 up to 16 years old, he dotes on them and is very caring around them. He really loves being played with and cuddled by his family. He has a great recall to the whistle or his name and will come quickly from which ever field he is in at the time when called. He hasn’t met any cats so his reactions are unknown. Oakley has become increasingly protective of his family and their land. He seems to have a misguided sense of needing to guard and has now unfortunately bitten several people and other dogs. This has been both as they have attempted to enter his driveway to get to the horses stables or more importantly by recently escaping onto the public road to go after a passer-by’s dogs, through areas of their fencing that have now become insecure after having the hedges cut right back. It looks secure but he’s managed to find his way out somehow. None of The bites have broken the skin, as he seems to lung and snap then back right away. Often walking away wagging One of the bites was a visitor who put her hand through their gate to open the bolt. She blamed herself for sticking her hand through, when they both came in the gentleman gave Oakley a row and told him off, he back off and was quickly forgiven and they happily walked him and looked after him while the family were on holidays for two weeks. Another was at the livery yard when he was being stroked and cuddled by a young lady when one of the other dogs started barking and he seemed to panic and jumped up and caught her on the finger, moments later he was rubbing against her legs again and enjoying having more fuss. The other was a postal worker who was on the drive talking to one of the children, Oakley caught him on the arm then ran back and stood behind the child. His owners believe he is a very anxious dog and is unclear of boundaries but it has got to the point now that he is too unpredictable for them to trust with people visiting frequently to ride the horses and deliver things. They believe he’s a very intelligent dog from a working line and he needs to be worked or have a purpose. The owners admit that a GSP wasn’t a breed that they had ever considered or knew anything about when he was given to them and maybe in a more experienced home Oakley wouldn’t feel the need to have started guarding them. Oakley is not yet neutered and this will be done by us as part of our Adoption Contract, he is fed a mixture of kibble and raw food which he loves, he’s KC registered, walked on a Halti and a harness and loves going out in the vehicle with the family. We will be looking for an experienced home with a secure garden that can show Oakley that he doesn’t need to take on the responsibility of guarding and can go back to being a playful dog again. If you feel you can help this gorgeous lad please contact us. Oakley is currently in the Gloucestershire area and will be rehomed with his 5 weeks free Agria insurance and Adoption Contract. About Oakley

What life with Oakley looks like

Oakley is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at GSP Rescue UK in United Kingdom.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oakley, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oakley?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. GSP Rescue UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oakley on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oakley if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — GSP Rescue UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oakley already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oakley isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with GSP Rescue UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oakley and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
