Adopt Oliver

Male

Hi, I'm Oliver, a beautiful macaw! History/Background: Oliver had previously been adopted through Problem Parrots, but his carer unfortunately fell seriously ill and he has had to come back into the charity. Current Condition: Oliver is a beautiful bird and is in good health. Training: He can become startled around people holding large objects near him (such as a vacuum cleaner or a brush), but if he can see them coming he can tolerate them – he doesn't like closed doors. Oliver is capable of stepping up but rarely does and is extremely nervous with new people. He will need someone with experience of handling and training bigger birds to help him build trust and confidence. Diet: Oliver eats Johnston and Jeff lean and fit parrot seed mix, as well as Top's pellets and ‘chop' (with a mix of fresh food) in the evening. He loves cashews and walnuts in the shell, too. He eats very well and is an easy boy to feed! Enrichment: His favourite thing to do is to chatter with you while he sits on his cage, but he also loves climbing on java trees, tapping his beak on the window. He doesn't really play with toys, but isn't destructive with other things in the room either. Summary: Oliver is learning to be less easily frightened in his safehouse and is a great bird to have around! He enjoys the company of people and likes to climb and look at people passing by outside (he even taps on the window to them!). He goes to bed when he knows it is time for dinner and isn't overly loud for a macaw – he is only vocal when he knows it is time for food. He only goes in his cage for bed. Overall, he is a wonderful, beautiful bird, so please don't hesitate to apply below if you think you could give him a loving home. Are you interested in adopting? About Oliver

What life with Oliver looks like

Oliver is a large adult bird waiting at Problem Parrots in United Kingdom.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oliver, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oliver?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Problem Parrots handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oliver on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oliver if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Problem Parrots will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oliver already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oliver isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Problem Parrots early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oliver and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
