Oma Karin

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 17 years

Just a few days ago, we introduced you to the 17-year-old blind cat who was rescued from a construction site on Eigenmannstraße in 75038 Oberderdingen, in the Flehingen district. We now know her story: For many years, she lived in the house that is now a construction site. Her owners have passed away, and after that, there was no one left who truly cared for her. Kind neighbors provided her with food, but she no longer had a home, security, or a sense of belonging. Now she’s with us—and we sincerely hope this is just a temporary stopover. At 17 years old and blind, it’s only natural that she feels completely insecure. She doesn’t recognize her surroundings, gets easily startled, and needs people who approach her with lots of patience, calmness, and understanding. She’s not a cat who immediately seeks closeness; she needs time to feel safe. Whoever gives her this time is giving her the most precious gift she could still receive. That’s why we’re looking for a loving sanctuary—a quiet place where she can simply be herself. A soft spot to curl up on, regular meals, and people who let her settle in slowly and gently. After 17 years, after losing her humans and her home, no cat should have to spend her twilight years in a shelter. Who will once again open their heart and home to this elderly lady cat? Please contact Ms. Schmitz if you think you could help fulfill her last big wish.

About Oma Karin

What life with Oma Karin looks like

Oma Karin is a large senior mixed breed cat waiting at Katzenhilfe Karlsruhe e.V. in Karlsruhe.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oma Karin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oma Karin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Katzenhilfe Karlsruhe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oma Karin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oma Karin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Katzenhilfe Karlsruhe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oma Karin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oma Karin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Katzenhilfe Karlsruhe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oma Karin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
