Adopt Onix B

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy

Onyx is our dog with the longest waiting time. Since March 2023, he has been living at our shelter – far too long for a dog who has so much to give. He is about 67 cm tall and was born in February 2022. He was found in our area, where a young man brought him to safety. Initially, this person wanted to adopt him, however, under the condition that Onyx remains unneutered, which was not acceptable to us. Thus began his long stay at the animal shelter. There have been interested parties repeatedly: Some were unreliable, others seemed promising. Recently everything looked good – after three months of regular visits in October, the adoption was canceled at short notice. Since then, Onyx has continued to wait. Onyx is a large, loving male dog with a strong but consistently friendly character. Despite his long time at the animal shelter, he has preserved his zest for life. He loves to dig, play with stuffed animals, and be active. Typical for his breed, he shows many traits of a Shepherd dog. He wants to please, strongly aligns himself with his people, and is very loyal to his primary caregiver. Once he has gained trust, he bonds closely and becomes a faithful companion. He generally gets along well with other dogs and has already lived harmoniously with fellow animals. However, when eating, he needs some peace as he eats slowly and does not want to be disturbed. Onyx is open, friendly, and very attentive towards people. He also meets strangers without fear, quickly recognizes good intentions, and actively seeks contact. Due to his size and temperament, he can sometimes be stormy, especially around smaller people. With clear leadership and structure, this can be easily guided. A Caniv-4D test performed on 24.03.2026 came back negative. Onyx is a kind, playful, and loyal dog who finally wants to settle down. He is looking for people who appreciate his loyalty and can finally give him a real home after such a long time at the animal shelter. A dream dog, missing only the right humans. We are happy to answer your questions.

About Onix B

What life with Onix B looks like

Onix B is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. in Nordwalde.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Onix B, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Onix B?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Onix B on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Onix B if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Onix B already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Onix B isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hundepfoten Steinfurt e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Onix B and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
