Paten wanted—smart, clingy, choleric Hi, it’s me, Pancho. When I arrived at animal shelter Gelnhausen in spring 2018, I was totally wound up, and when they took me out of my kennel, my first instinct was to lunge at the shelter manager. So, did I put my foot right in it??? Well, not really—because Corina immediately knew I’m a special guy who absolutely needs focused training. And except when I’m being photographed for the website, I wear a muzzle—and not without good reason. Maybe someday I won’t need it anymore, but until then, it’ll definitely take some time. My issue is that when stressed, I get extremely worked up and start snapping! Until recently, even a fly on the wall or a shadow on the floor was enough to set me off… Okay, I’ll be honest: those things still stress me out, BUT if someone removes me from that situation right away, I can now be interrupted and calm back down. My “meltdowns,” which used to happen constantly at first, are now occurring less and less often. What else can I tell you about myself? I’m undeniably a handsome fellow—I’m smart, clingy, and cuddly. Here at animal shelter, I’ve got my favorite people I love sticking close to, and I really enjoy getting the occasional pet from them. Unfortunately, they don’t have as much time for me as I’d like, which is why I’m longing sooo much for a home of my own!!! A quiet, stress-free home would be perfect! My new humans should be tough enough to interrupt me when I spin out of control, and they must accept that it’ll take me a while longer to become a relaxed dog. There shouldn’t be any children in my new home. And you must understand that, for the foreseeable future, I’ll need to wear a muzzle at all times! Also gleich mal ins Fettnäpfchen gesetzt??? About Pancho

What life with Pancho looks like

Pancho is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pancho, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pancho?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pancho on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pancho if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pancho already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pancho isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pancho and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
