Onu

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Description Update05.05.2026: We do not understand why no one has shown interest in this lovely fellow. He has not received a single reasonable inquiry. It is truly sad. Onu has developed well. He can now ride the train and has become much cooler. He still loves to play and run around. Onu is urgently seeking experienced, patient people. The association is unfortunately having trouble covering the pension costs for much longer. It is a lot of money for such a small association. That's why we are also urgently seeking sponsors for the dear Onu, because where else can he go? An experienced foster home would also help Onu.15.08.2025: Onu is making great progress in training and can be easily leashed by his primary caregiver, and he loves walks. Onu is ready for his new home. A home without chaos, but with empathy and patience. Onu lived as a chained dog in Romania, what a hard life. Fortunately, he was able to travel out in September 2023. Onu is a very clever and lively dog who moved into a family with children. It turned out that Onu has trouble assessing small children. Probably, he had never had contact with children before, and he was unsettled. Out of this insecurity, Onu didn't know how to handle it and snapped a few times. He never hurt anyone, he just wanted to "get to safety." He didn't know any better. Onu had to leave the family. Onu also shows a lot of POSITIVITY! He is a happy dog who loves to run and play and learn new commands and tricks for a happy dog life. Onu has a lot of energy that he wants to get rid of, and the best way to do that is by working diligently and positively training him. He currently lives in a dog pension with a trainer. There, he is open to the trainers and works well with them. Onu does not like small dogs. There should be a large, independent dog in the new home, or no other dog at all. In the dog pension, he has formed a friendship with the male dog Petermann, and this does him a lot of good. The two play a lot, and Onu feels safe and braver when Petermann is around. Therefore, we can imagine that a confident, friendly, only dog could help Onu find his place in the new family. An introduction and "testing" to see if the chemistry between the dogs works is absolutely desired. The confident, friendly only dog could be a door opener for Onu. Children should not live in the household. We are looking for experienced, very patient people who want to work with Onu using positive training, are not deterred if he snaps once in a while, and are consistent. Onu needs these "owner qualities" so that his insecurity turns into the security he needs to share a beautiful life together. Who wants to take on this challenge and give Onu a home? Onu can be visited at the kennel in Freiburg. The responsible caregivers are happy to take the time for the introduction. Our dogs usually come to their new home neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas, and with an EU passport. Additionally, they are tested for leishmaniasis and Ehrlichiosis (from the age of 1 year, as it is not conclusive before then). The dogs from Romania are tested for five travel diseases and Giardia. This animal has a history of biting.

About Onu

What life with Onu looks like

Onu is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierischgeholfen e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Onu, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Onu?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierischgeholfen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Onu on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Onu if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierischgeholfen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Onu already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Onu isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierischgeholfen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Onu and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
