Onyx

Cockapoo Β· Male Β· Young Β· 1 year

Meet Onyx! Handsome Onyx is looking for a very special home with someone who can give him the time, patience and understanding he needs to feel safe. When Onyx first arrived in our care, he was absolutely terrified. He would hide away in the corner of his kennel, too frightened to interact with anyone. If approached, he would growl, not out of malice, but because he was scared and didn’t know who he could trust. Over the last few weeks, we have slowly started to see a different side to this lovely boy. With gentle handling, patience and plenty of reassurance, Onyx has begun to come out of his shell, and underneath all that fear is a very sweet, affectionate little lad. Once Onyx feels comfortable in your company, he really does enjoy a fuss and some affection. However, he is still easily startled by sudden movements and remains unsure in unfamiliar situations. Onyx is looking for a quiet, calm and understanding home where he can settle at his own pace. He needs someone who won’t expect too much too soon, who will respect his boundaries and allow him to build trust in his own time. Experience with very timid or fearful dogs would be a real advantage, as his new adopter will need to understand that progress may be slow and that even the smallest steps forward are worth celebrating. Onyx doesn’t need someone to rush or push him into situations he isn’t ready for. He needs somebody who will simply give him the space, security and reassurance to discover that the world isn’t such a scary place after all. He will need a private secure garden. Any potential adopter must commit to several meet and greets before the adoption can take place. Onyx has socialised well with other dogs and is very playful. We feel he could potentially live with another dog of similar size following a successful meet and greet (must be neutered). As Onyx came into the home as a stray, we have no previous history on him and as he is still very timid/nervous we would like him to go to a quiet adult only home, with no children.

About Onyx

What life with Onyx looks like

Onyx is a medium-sized young adult cockapoo dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Onyx, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Onyx?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Onyx on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Onyx if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Onyx already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Onyx isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Onyx and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
