Orestis

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Male ORESTIS, born around 03/2025, shoulder height about 56 cm and about 23-25 kg body weight, is looking for a basket right away. The handsome Orestis, born around mid-March 2025, is still waiting for his chance. He was found alone on the street at a very young age and had a difficult start in life. Therefore, he now wishes for people where he can finally feel at home. Orestis is a rather quiet, gentle young male dog who is currently still cautiously moving through the world. He tends to be reserved, prefers to observe first, and needs a moment to get used to new things. The leash is still unfamiliar to him and needs to be properly learned. During walks, he sometimes lacks orientation, so he needs to be gently guided occasionally. However, with patience and practice, he will surely learn quickly. It's likely that Orestis also has a slight hunting instinct (it hasn't been sufficiently tested yet). In direct contact, Orestis initially appears somewhat reserved and sometimes even slightly shy. Once he has gained trust, there is a loving, affectionate dog inside him who can enjoy human company. A little cuddler who just needs time to warm up. In new situations or during encounters - especially with larger, confident dogs - he may appear insecure and sometimes barks. This seems more like insecurity rather than real "rowdiness." With the right guidance and security from his humans, he will learn to handle it more confidently. Orestis currently lives lovingly and without complications with a female dog in a pen. Orestis has great potential: he is a sweet, sensitive young dog who probably gets along well with other dogs, but above all needs people with patience, understanding, and calm interaction who show him that he doesn't have to be afraid. Whoever is ready to give him this time will find in Orestis a loyal and loving companion who can grow beyond himself step by step. Who will give this gentle boy his forever home? We do not place in very urban living areas or in families with small children. Please only submit an adoption inquiry if the adoption is possible at the time mentioned in the text and you have already discussed the acceptance of a new family member with your family (possibly other involved persons such as employer, landlord, temporary care). Please note that the dogs described here are currently in their foster home or in the animal shelter in a limited, safe environment and have little contact with other people or environmental stimuli outside the property. The descriptions are based on the behavior in this familiar environment. Especially puppies and young dogs are still developing their character. For successful adaptation to a new home, they need time, patience, and loving guidance to get used to the new environment and various stimuli and to grow into secure dogs.

About Orestis

What life with Orestis looks like

Orestis is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Orestis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Orestis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Orestis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Orestis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Orestis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Orestis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Orestis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
