Oscar

Bichon Frisé · Male · Adult · 5 years

Oscar is looking for a home with adopters who can take him on gentle sniffy strolls, who will take the time to help him settle in and give him all the love and attention he deserves. He can be an independent boy, so could live with older secondary school children who can let him approach at his own pace, who will play with him nicely and will give him space to rest when needed. Oscar finds overly friendly and playful dogs rather overwhelming so would prefer to be the only dog in the home so he can relax and enjoy his home, he could build up to having calm and polite walking buddies but will need to be on a lead at all times when in public. Oscar is not super interested in training but could potentially be encouraged to engage in training in short, sweet sessions as long as a tasty treat is on offer. Oscar is worried being left so is looking for someone to be home the majority of the time or someone who can take him with them if they need to go out, any leaving time would need to be built up slowly once he has had time to settle into his new home. Oscar is taking daily medication and will need to meet his adopters multiple times prior to going home so please bear all of this in mind when applying. Sweet little gentleman Oscar is a 5 year older Bichon Frise who loves to sleep on your feet at night. He hasn’t shown any interest in toys so far and is happy to plod along on walks, enjoying the views and is in no real hurry to get places. He likes to be your shadow, following you around the house and if you are working from home he will get comfy and cuddle down at your feet ready to assist whenever you need him. He is a big fan of fusses, he especially likes a back and neck scratch, he will paw you or nudge your hand with his nose when he needs more cuddles. This gentle guy is ready to find his new home.

About Oscar

What life with Oscar looks like

Oscar is a large adult bichon frisé dog waiting at Dogs Trust Canterbury in Chestfield.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oscar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oscar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Canterbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oscar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oscar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Canterbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Oscar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oscar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Canterbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oscar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
