Otis (SWe)

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy

One day, several small puppies appeared on the parking lot of a volcano in Inselnorden. Vacationers noticed them and alerted us. The relevant authorities were called in, and eventually, the puppies' owner was found. The puppies came from an adjacent goat farm where their mother also lived. The dogs were left to their own devices, able to slip under the fence and roam freely. After talking with the owner, it was agreed that our animal protection colleagues Sarah and Sven would take the puppies in, in exchange for spaying the mother dog. So, the four siblings—Otis, Oriana, Opal, and Orelie—moved to our foster home Finca Sarah. Their condition was concerning: covered in ticks and fleas, bloated worm bellies, and clear signs of improper nutrition. In the first few days, it became apparent that they had mostly been fed scraps like beans, chili, paprika, or corn. It was wonderful to see how quickly they recovered, how well they accepted the good puppy food, and how much they enjoyed the daily care. Otis is the only male in the sibling quartet and does a good job at it. While his three sisters sometimes take the lead, he remains calm and composed, not easily ruffled. He is more of a laid-back type who doesn’t get into every fray and can also be quite submissive. His great strength is his people-oriented nature: as soon as we enter the enclosure, the siblings are secondary. Otis immediately seeks the proximity, enjoys every pet, and shows himself to be a very clingy, cuddly little guy. A gentle character with a lot of heart, who puts the proximity to "his" people above all else. The Barino, also known as Majoreiro, is an original, robust dog breed from the Canaries. Characteristic of them are their intelligence, alertness, and close bond with their people. They are considered loyal, sensitive, and rather independent. Consistent, but loving leadership, as well as sufficient mental and physical stimulation, are important so that they develop into well-balanced companions. That’s why we are looking for owners of the Barino breed for Otis, who can consistently lead him. Additionally, his new home should ideally be in a rural setting and preferably have an enclosed yard. Otis can travel to his new home, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and tested for Mediterranean diseases, starting around mid-May 2026. Who would like to share their life with the cute Otis? ? About Otis (SWe)

What life with Otis (SWe) looks like

Otis (SWe) is a puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Fuerteventura in Dransfeld.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

Frequently asked

Adopting Otis (SWe), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Otis (SWe)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Fuerteventura handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Otis (SWe) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Otis (SWe) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Fuerteventura will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Otis (SWe) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Otis (SWe) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Fuerteventura early rather than rehoming privately; they know Otis (SWe) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
