Adopt Otto

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 5 years

Our Otto – a special case. In late November, he was taken in with his German Shepherd partner Hummel under tragic circumstances. The two had unfortunately lost their owner and were not in the best health condition. While Hummel, though fit as a fiddle but round as a beach ball, dashed through our door, Otto immediately drew attention with his skinny frame and concerning swollen scrotum. His condition worsened quickly, necessitating his admission to a clinic as an emergency case. With a bag full of medications and hope for recovery in his heart, we were able to bring him back and his recovery has been steady and gradual. Otto has fought his way back to his four legs and with his charming nature, he quickly won the hearts of everyone. He loves going for walks, letting the fresh air blow around his nose when out in the open, and being thoroughly belly-rubbed. In short, he enjoys life and would like to continue doing so outside the animal shelter bubble. Otto is therefore looking for a quiet, ground-floor home, preferably with an enclosed garden, where he can be cared for according to his health condition. The walks would need to be adjusted for him. He is very motivated, but cycling and hours of walking are understandable to fall by the wayside. Comfort and coziness are what he craves, and he is happy as long as he has his people. Otto's buddy "Hummel" (5 years old) is also still looking for a home. Otto Purpose:

About Otto

What life with Otto looks like

Otto is a adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Emden in Emden.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Otto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Otto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Emden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Otto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Otto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Emden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Otto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Otto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Emden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Otto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
