Patenhund * Jokers

Mixed Breed · Male

Here is the action for Hundewurst for Jokers, who came into our care at Tierhilfe Franken in the fall of 2019 after several animal welfare organizations had already declined to take in two further German Shepherds. Jokers came from a German breeding line and had to produce many offspring throughout his life. Most of the time, he spent in a holding pen, only sleeping in a room in the house at night. When his breeder could no longer continue breeding due to health reasons, there were always emergency solutions between moving to a kennel and temporary "one meal a day" care. Eventually, the dogs were to be sold to a German-speaking breeder in Poland. Fortunately, Jokers' daughter did not allow this and reached out to various animal welfare organizations, asking for the dogs to be taken in. At that time, however, she received only rejections. Her engagement was still rewarded. Desperate, she turned to Tierhilfe Franken. Now, all wheels at our shelter were in motion, as we wanted to help, but it was not so easy to find appropriate care for three large German Shepherds. Fortunately, and thanks to our dedicated foster families, this was achieved, and we took Jokers and his companions in. The handsome boy found a foster home with a small garden in Nuremberg. After settling in, he felt very well and enjoyed his new life. Upon intake, it was noticed that Jokers did not move quite "smoothly." A vet appointment was scheduled – the diagnosis was cauda-equina syndrome. Following this, he received physiotherapy. However, no real improvement seemed to be occurring. The treating physiotherapist, Nicole Jäger, then recommended a genetic test for degenerative myelopathy. We ordered a genetic test from LABOklin Labor für Klinische Diagnostik, and the result, as feared, was degenerative myelopathy. By this time, Jokers could no longer move his hind legs and dragged them behind him. Both Jokers and his foster dad went through a very hard phase, as the lovable male dog still had so much energy; he ate with great appetite, cuddled, and played with his favorite bone. Since good experiences had been made with a German Shepherd in a wheelchair in the past, and there was no doubt that Jokers did not want to give up walking, the team at Tierhilfe Franken, in consultation with Dr. Lipper, the vet, and the physiotherapist, decided to get Jokers a wheelchair. But enough of the words, see for yourselves – our Jokers with his wheelchair and pure joy of life! We thank all who have supported Jokers and those who wish to continue supporting him in a special way. We receive life – click to donate.

Tierischen Dank

About Patenhund * Jokers

What life with Patenhund * Jokers looks like

Patenhund * Jokers is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Franken e.V. in Lauf.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Patenhund * Jokers, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Patenhund * Jokers?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Franken e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Patenhund * Jokers on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Patenhund * Jokers if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Franken e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Patenhund * Jokers already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Patenhund * Jokers isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Franken e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Patenhund * Jokers and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
