Patenhund * Mary Lou

Mixed Breed · Female

female dog Mary Lou needs help. Recently, a handwritten plea for help from a breeder in Nuremberg reached us. The Tierhilfe Franken e.V. operates entirely on their own, but they also try to help as much as possible. Yorki-Mix Mary Lou has a loving home. However, the twelve-year-old female dog has heart problems, and the costs are so high that her owner can no longer afford them alone. "I have had her since she was eight weeks old; at that time, she was as big as my hand," Mary Lou's owner recounts, watching as her female dog carries a cuddly toy through the room. Slowly, tears well up in her eyes. "I cannot give her up; she means so much to me!" Together with the little female dog, they have weathered some crises, but now Mary Lou's health is causing great concern: One of the female dog's heart valves does not close properly, so Mary Lou must be regularly checked, including with an ultrasound. Additionally, she takes daily pills to support her heart and circulation, as well as diuretics. Thanks to the medication, Mary Lou manages well, but the rising veterinary costs are causing her owner great distress. She receives social assistance because she can no longer work daily. Epilepsy, an autoimmune disease, a prosthetic knee joint, and arthritis – the medical history of Mary Lou's owner is long, and the dog has always provided a lot of support. But now, she simply cannot afford the veterinary costs on her own, and acquaintances have helped her out. She borrowed around 800 euros from the couple. She is now paying it back in small installments. But she is still worried about what the future might bring: "It just keeps going on and on, and I am worried if something else happens." Part of the burden was taken off Mary Lou's owner by the Tierhilfe Franken. The association helped her with 400 euros. "That was a great relief, and I was very happy," the woman says, smiling. But she still has little money available, must pay off the remaining debts, and knows that high veterinary costs will continue to come her way. We visited Mary Lou and her owner and experienced the two as a great team that has gone through a lot together and deserves support. Therefore, we are asking for donations to provide the two with a financial buffer for the upcoming veterinary costs. Even small donations can help so that the two can look forward to the future with less worry.

About Patenhund * Mary Lou

What life with Patenhund * Mary Lou looks like

Patenhund * Mary Lou is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Franken e.V. in Lauf.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Patenhund * Mary Lou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Patenhund * Mary Lou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Franken e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Patenhund * Mary Lou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Patenhund * Mary Lou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Franken e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Patenhund * Mary Lou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Patenhund * Mary Lou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Franken e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Patenhund * Mary Lou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
