Pecas &#8211

Mixed Breed · Female

Miracles happen again and again - and in animal protection, one often has the great privilege of experiencing them. For our approximately seven-year-old Pecas (as of 10/2021), we are not only looking for a miracle, but above all for extremely wonderful people. Pecas probably lived many years on the street. Herding dogs are still part of the normal scene in villages in Southern Europe and are rarely abused and driven away compared to other dogs - however, this really only applies in the countryside, in cities people often react very aggressively towards these large, bear-like dogs ... Pecas lived undisturbed for a long time, which was also due to the fact that, as a clever girl, she only went out for food at night. But then Pecas got sick, she developed a severe form of mange (a mite infestation of the skin, which without treatment leads to severe itching, inflammation, and loss of fur) and could only walk slowly because of the pain. Due to her appearance and the fact that the suffering animal was walking through the village more and more often during the day, residents became aware of Pecas and got scared for their children. The dog catchers of the Perrera took care of the "problem", which actually already signed Pecas' death sentence. Fortunately, animal welfare workers in Spain are very active when it comes to rescuing sick animals from being killed. Another association noticed Pecas, who immediately ensured that the sad and frightened female dog could move into a foster home until the animal welfare workers from Dolmen Animal could take care of her. We don't want to sugarcoat anything, Pecas is not a "normal" dog, she's not even a normal fearful dog (if such a thing exists). The massive Mastiff simply has no experience with humans, she has been busy avoiding bipeds for years. Now she can't avoid them anymore, she has to learn every step - and she is afraid. Pecas is not yet really touchable, she still finds it very bad when volunteers come into her accommodation, she prefers to go into the yard when there is no one else there. Treating her skin is difficult, because Pecas hates any contact - but although she growls, she has never snapped or bitten. Every day she understands more that no one wants to do her harm, but she needs infinite time, love, patience and care. In the animal shelter it will take months or even years for Pecas to heal inside and out, she needs YOUR help. We are looking for a home for Pecas that can first give her her freedom. A large, well-secured garden would be absolutely essential, our worldly-wise lady has never known a leash and can't imagine a walk without being free. The house belonging to the garden should be ground floor or have only a few steps and preferably be built in such a way that Pecas can mostly decide herself whether she wants to be outside or inside. Finding a family for Pecas seems like an almost impossible task, but we know that the right people for this troubled child can be found in the Arca family. If you feel you can enable this very special girl to start a completely new life, please don't hesitate. Our adoption officers will gladly advise you, answer your questions and help dispel doubts!

About Pecas &#8211

What life with Pecas &#8211 looks like

Pecas &#8211 is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pecas &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pecas &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pecas &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pecas &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pecas &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pecas &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pecas &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
