Pelle

Border Collie · Male · Senior · 13 years

- friendly with trusted people - gets along well with other dogs - typical senior temperament - still needs training - will not be rehomed with children or other animals Pelle came to us from a friendly animal shelter as part of a dog exchange, as he could not be housed according to his needs there. Before his time at the animal shelter, he lived with a foster parent where he could do whatever he wanted. He was even allowed to leave the house whenever and however he wanted. At our shelter, Pelle runs in a mixed dog group, but he pays little attention to the other dogs. The big boy spends a lot of time with his trusted people, enjoys cuddles, and now even lets himself be groomed. However, Pelle's favorite are the walks with his volunteer walker, even though his age is noticeable: In the twilight, his eyes do not focus as sharply, and his hearing is not as clear either. Due to Pelle's unfulfilled and unobserved past, he initially showed a very strong prey drive: Especially cars, balls, running children, and animals awakened his hunting instinct. Now, the senior has learned a lot, and this behavior has significantly reduced. However, it can still occasionally happen that the fluffy guy gives in to his prey drive. Due to spondylosis, Pelle takes pain medication, which he takes without issue, as well as his epilepsy medication. Pelle is medicated so well that one cannot notice the illness, but still requires regular veterinary check-ups.

DE·Show original

About Pelle

What life with Pelle looks like

Pelle is a large senior border collie dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pelle, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pelle?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pelle on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pelle if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pelle already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pelle isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pelle and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
