Adopt Pepe

Podenco · Male · Adult · 4 years

Akira Dog Sanctuary Input 16 januari 2026: Pepe is a large, gentle and calm Podenco, born on 1 December 2021, with a particularly kind character. His start in life has been anything but easy. When he came to us, he was extremely thin and had clear pressure sores and wounds. His body showed that he had not received enough care and attention for a long time. Yet, Pepe, despite everything he has been through, has retained his soft and friendly nature. Pepe is a devoted dog who greatly enjoys comfort and safety. He is visibly happy with his warm, soft bed and can greatly enjoy his meals. Eating is not only a need for him, but also a moment of pure happiness. With other dogs, Pepe is extremely kind and social; he is friendly with both small and large dogs and feels comfortable in their company. In contact with people, you can see him slowly but surely grow. Pepe is beginning to gain more trust, especially indoors where he feels safer. Outside, he finds the world still exciting and can react with fear, but with patience, calmness and consistent guidance, he makes beautiful progress. For Pepe we are looking for an experienced adopter who understands his behavior and gives him the time to recover further and gain trust in people and himself. A quiet living environment is essential for him. In the right hands, Pepe will grow into a loyal, loving companion who is deeply grateful for any form of love and safety he receives.

About Pepe

What life with Pepe looks like

Pepe is a small adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pepe, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pepe?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pepe on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pepe if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pepe already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pepe isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pepe and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
