Pepina (Josephine)

Mixed Breed · Female

We took in Pepinu after her owner was injured, who unfortunately eventually passed away in the hospital. Although she fought like a lioness to be able to return home with Josefínka, when it became clear that this would not happen, we were asked by her, her family and close friend to take Pepinu into our temporary care, from which we are looking for the best forever home for her. Pepa (as she is called in temporary care) has already undergone all veterinary check-ups and treatments. Since Pepina had a real weight problem, when she came to us, she had difficulties moving, lying down and getting up. However, we have managed to slowly reduce her weight, and the problems with lying down and standing up have completely disappeared. However, an important fact is that it is necessary to keep her weight within a reasonable range, as X-rays showed findings on her hips and knees. Therefore, she needs to receive chondro preparations every day preventively, even though she currently has no problems or pain. In complete blood tests, a problem with the thyroid gland function was detected. Every morning, she takes one tablet on an empty stomach, which she really willingly swallows and everything goes without any struggles - oh yes :-) As for the thyroid gland, the only issue is that sometimes her fur falls out somewhere and new fur grows back. Nothing that causes her any discomfort. Pepa is fully vaccinated, spayed, and during the neutering, we had the structure (bulka) removed, which we sent for histological examination. The result was absolutely great: a benign mixed tumor of the mammary gland, or a non-cancerous mass. Pepa can now calmly pack her bag and go home. There's nothing stopping her adoption anymore :-) As for her personality, she is our little dependent. She was used to being at home with her original owner, and therefore she's still learning (and continues to learn!) that most people have to go to work :-D After the first escapades, she learned that we really do come back, and that we certainly don't want to leave her. We are still in the process of learning that the world doesn't collapse when you go to work. She absolutely loves toys, whether rubber or stuffed. And unfortunately, she knows better than our offspring how many toys she actually has. So when she hides one somewhere, the whole family looks for it :-D Until the toy is found, no one can go to sleep. Then we look really intensively :-D We also have to say that German shepherds are incredibly intelligent, or at least Pepinka is. She tells us exactly what she needs: that her toy rolled somewhere and where exactly, that she finished her bowl of water, that it's time for dinner, that she wants to go outside. She either stares at us, nudges us with her nose, or barks. And if it really takes a long time and we aren't doing miracles for her, she simply kicks us with her front paw :-D She is really communicative and has a wide range of expressions :-) If you would like to contribute to Josefínka, we attach the number of a transparent veterinary account, where you can track financial transactions: In the photo gallery, you will also find a QR code for quick payment without specifying an amount.

Nic, co by ji nějak soužilo.

About Pepina (Josephine)

What life with Pepina (Josephine) looks like

Pepina (Josephine) is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Šance zvířatům in Czech Republic.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇿Adopting from Czech Republic

Czech shelters (útulky) include sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID. The adopter signs a written contract (smlouva) — the shelter may follow up to verify wellbeing.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pepina (Josephine), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pepina (Josephine)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Šance zvířatům handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pepina (Josephine) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pepina (Josephine) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Šance zvířatům will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pepina (Josephine) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pepina (Josephine) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Šance zvířatům early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pepina (Josephine) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (CS). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
