Petra

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

Another dog from the so-called PPP (potentially dangerous) category—though we prefer to call them “potentially clingy.” Petra was picked up by the police in a residential neighborhood of single-family homes, where she had been abandoned. As soon as we received the notification, we went to pick her up. She’s about a year and a half old and is a very sociable, friendly, and affectionate little dog. She’s active and energetic, with an incredible eagerness to explore the world, play, and greet everyone she encounters along the way. As for how she gets along with other dogs, we’re still assessing that. She doesn’t seem to have any issues, but given her exuberant nature, introductions will need to be done calmly and gradually. Otherwise, she’s a wonderful dog—she lets us handle her without any trouble and is completely healthy. All that’s left now is for her to find a family who’ll give her the chance she so richly deserves. She’s already spayed. Leishmaniasis test is negative. The 4-Idexx test (for ehrlichia, filaria, anaplasma, and borrelia) is also negative. Show more of her story Show less

Test 4 Idexx (ehrlichia, filaria, anaplasma y borrelia) negativo. Mostrar más de su historia Mostrar menos

About Petra

What life with Petra looks like

Petra is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at ALBA Protectora Madrid in Madrid.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Petra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Petra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ALBA Protectora Madrid handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Petra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Petra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ALBA Protectora Madrid will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Petra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Petra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ALBA Protectora Madrid early rather than rehoming privately; they know Petra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
