Adopt Petra

Podenco · Female · Adult · 8 years

Protectora de Animals y Plantas de Malaga Input 22 January 2026: Petra is a shelter dog with a gaze that seems to tell stories we will never fully know. She is about 9 years old and came to us after being left by her owner, without any information about her previous life. Yet, Petra shows every day that despite everything she has been through, she still has a lot of love to give. From a veterinary perspective, Petra has experienced several important events in a short time. On 25/05/25, she underwent surgery to remove the mammary glands from her left chest due to a tumor, and she was also spayed during the same procedure. A chest X-ray was taken, confirming the good news that there were no metastases in her lungs. Later, on 27/09/25, she was operated again to remove the other mammary glands, and she also had a dental cleaning. At this moment, Petra is recovering and stable. Regarding her personality, she seems to be a very home-loving dog. She likes to play with a ball and enjoys quiet moments, especially when she feels safe. At first, she can be shy and cautious around people she doesn't know, but once she gains confidence, her kindest side comes out: she often asks for cuddles and receives affection. She has a clear weakness... sausages. She loves them so much that she can even overcome her fear of strangers if one is nearby. The changes she has gone through in such a short time have somewhat stressed Petra. Because of this, she may growl or even bite out of fear while being handled—especially when putting on her harness or during visits to the clinic. For this reason, we recommend that she does not live with small children. She is also incompatible with cats, as during the shelter tests she barked constantly and could cause stress. Currently, she shares a kennel with both males and females without problems, so we think she can live well with other dogs in a house. Petra needs a calm, patient, and understanding family that can give her time, safety, and stability. In return, she will offer loyalty, tenderness, and very special companionship.

About Petra

What life with Petra looks like

Petra is a small adult podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Petra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Petra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Petra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Petra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Petra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Petra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Petra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
