Adopt Piper

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Our Piper (ca. 21 kg) came to us at our shelter because her previous owners no longer had the time due to a job change. Piper has been living at our animal shelter for over two years and has made great progress during this time. At first, she was very skeptical of strangers, but with a get-to-know ritual, she now builds trust with strangers much faster. Once Piper has someone in her heart, she shows herself as an incredibly loving and cuddly female dog who enjoys spending time with her people. Unfortunately, she has developed a leash aggression due to bad experiences in the past. This means that she can react to various stimuli like people, bicycles, other dogs, etc., with barking on walks. We regularly work with her on this behavior and see continuous improvements. However, it requires some management, which we will teach the new owners in small steps. For Piper, we wish for dog-experienced people who are not deterred by her leash aggression and are willing to continue working on these issues with her. An ideal home for Piper is a quiet household without other dogs, cats, or children. Ideally, in a rural environment where she is exposed to few stimuli. With patience, time, and a trusted primary caregiver, Piper will surely become a loyal, grateful, and wonderful companion for life. This animal was abandoned.

About Piper

What life with Piper looks like

Piper is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Zürcher Tierschutz in Zürich.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Leash aggression requiring ongoing training and management

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Piper, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Piper?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Zürcher Tierschutz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Piper on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Piper if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Zürcher Tierschutz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Piper already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Piper isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Zürcher Tierschutz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Piper and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
