Pocholo

Male · Senior · 15 years

Pocholo - an older gentleman with peculiarities. Pocholo is an old Spanish Water Dog who, after his owner's death, was discarded on the street along with his old companion despite his disability. Thus, the two eventually were lucky to end up in a shelter. Pocholo arrived at his foster home in November in really deplorable condition, extremely thin, seriously ill, and with heavily matted and dirty fur. The poor fellow had struggled on the street with his companion for some time. Unfortunately, more details are not known. Due to his mobility impairment and clear coordination disorders, especially of the right hind leg, he was certainly no longer able to successfully hunt. He could barely walk 200-300 meters slowly. After four months, Pocholo is free from parasites, tartar, some teeth, and his excess fur, has gained almost three kilograms, and is becoming increasingly mobile. He can now cover distances of about two kilometers without problems. Sometimes he even jumps or runs down the hallway. He manages few normal height steps surprisingly well, needing help only very rarely. Pocholo is housebroken, but only if he is not left alone at home, then he suffers a lot, is totally stressed, and goes inside. The same applies to car rides. Both are practiced step by step, with the help of the lick mat he loves very much. When Pocholo is with his foster mother at home, he is calm and completely relaxed, and he prefers to stay near her or on one of his dog beds. He is completely free of any aggression, eats two to three times a day with great appetite, and enjoys petting. His hearing seems to be not very good anymore. Pocholo is content in a quiet, ground-floor household where he is always in company. Therefore, for his remaining time, a patient, loving elderly couple would be ideal. It is very important that he must never be left alone as much as possible.

About Pocholo

What life with Pocholo looks like

Pocholo is a large senior dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pocholo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pocholo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pocholo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pocholo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pocholo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pocholo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pocholo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
