Portia

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Portia is affectionate and loving with people but unlike some velcro dogs, Portia also deeply values her personal space and independence. She enjoys companionship on her own terms and likes calm, respectful interactions where she feels safe and understood. Because of this, she would not be suited to a loud or chaotic home with very young or noisy children. Portia would thrive best in a peaceful environment with people who appreciate her gentle nature. With other dogs, Portia does very well. She is social and comfortable around them, although she is not the type to constantly seek out play or attention. She is perfectly happy to coexist peacefully, joining in when she feels like it and quietly minding her own business when she doesn’t. She carries herself with the calm confidence often seen in small dogs who know exactly who they are. However, Portia does not like cats and would need a feline-free home. Portia also has a medical condition that her future adopter will need to understand and manage responsibly. During a veterinary examination, she was diagnosed with a grade 4 heart murmur with evidence of cardiac enlargement. Importantly, she is currently asymptomatic, meaning she shows no outward signs of illness and continues to live a happy, normal life. Her vets have recommended long-term medical management in order to protect her heart health for as long as possible. Portia will therefore require medication for the rest of her life. At the moment, she feels absolutely fine and enjoys life normally, she runs, goes out for walks, doesn’t pant or cough but her future family must be prepared for the financial and emotional responsibility that comes with managing a chronic heart condition. Despite this diagnosis, Portia remains a bright, happy little dog with so much life and love ahead of her. What she truly needs now is stability, a calm, loving forever home where she can feel safe, respected, and cherished exactly as she is. Portia has also had extensive dental work completed, including the removal of several teeth. Like many very small breeds, especially Yorkshire Terriers, she has been prone to dental issues, which are extremely common in tiny dogs despite good care. She has recovered well from her dental procedures and manages perfectly fine without the removed teeth. In fact, she continues to eat, play, and enjoy life normally. Her future home should simply be aware that maintaining good dental hygiene and regular veterinary check-ups will remain an important part of keeping her healthy and comfortable long-term. Tiny dogs like Portia often get overlooked when medical care is involved but those willing to open their hearts to a dog with ongoing needs often discover just how rewarding that bond can become. Portia may require daily medication but in return she offers companionship, loyalty, sweetness, and the special kind of trust that forms when a dog finally knows they are truly home.

About Portia

What life with Portia looks like

Portia is a small adult mixed breed animal waiting at Amospet in Skopje.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Portia far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇲🇰Adopting from North Macedonia

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Portia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Portia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Amospet handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Portia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Portia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Amospet will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Portia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Portia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Amospet early rather than rehoming privately; they know Portia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
