Pumuckl, the gentle giant, who unfortunately was born as a watchdog and was never properly trained. He is playful, loves to romp, and on the other hand, he loves to cuddle and be petted. His trusted people are sacred to him, and he wants to protect them. He is very responsive, but every person who does not belong to his!! family must be protected, because Pumuckl makes sudden and quick decisions. Who has a wonderful property that is absolutely securely fenced and a dry, spacious, warm place to go with it? Who has enough patience to sneak into Muckl's heart as the primary caregiver? Who loves taking walks with Muckl and playing games with him? Muckl is a dream dog! The Moscow Watchdog in a Bernese Mountain Dog outfit. What we know and can tell you about Pumuckl is actually that we don't really know much about him. We don't know where he originally came from or how old he is, nor do we know what he has already experienced in his life. What we do know: He lived here!!! Together with the Veterinary Office, we brought the giant from there to the animal shelter. For this, he had to be sedated, as he had already been noticed for biting. Euthanasia was seriously considered. We managed to negotiate a four-week trial period for Pumuckl, and the gentle giant survived it. Pumuckl is also looking for his home: Pumuckl would very much like to continue using his guarding talent on a generous, fully and well-secured property. Buuuut:

About Pumuckl

What life with Pumuckl looks like

Pumuckl is a extra-large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Alsfeld in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pumuckl, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pumuckl?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Alsfeld handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pumuckl on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pumuckl if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Alsfeld will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pumuckl already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pumuckl isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Alsfeld early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pumuckl and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
