Adopt Rafy

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Rafy came to us from older owners who could no longer care for him. He lived in the yard for many years, which affected the condition of his coat - it was in a bad state, so it had to be completely shaved. Rafy is an elderly dog, a senior gentleman with his moods - and honestly, who wouldn't have them at this age. When someone wakes him up from sleep, he can growl and is not exactly in the best mood, but that's completely understandable. Otherwise, he is a calm, low-maintenance dog who enjoys the warmth, comfort and peace of his bed. Gradually, he has become accustomed to handling - at first he didn't like it and reacted defensively, but now he handles it much better. He is a big eater - food is a small part of his life. Right now, he eats canned food mixed with water. He underwent extensive dental treatment, during which 16 teeth were removed and his gums were sutured. A liquid diet is still necessary, but he will gradually transition to a firmer food. The teeth were in very bad condition, even with a hole all the way to the nasal cavity, which could have caused his breathing difficulties. Rafy also had a complete cardiological examination. Based on the results, he has been prescribed Cardisure, which he will probably take for life. His current condition is stabilized and under control. He behaves politely indoors, doesn't destroy things and has good hygiene habits. With other dogs and female dogs, he gets along according to his preferences - he doesn't mind their presence as long as they don't bother him too much. Rafy is looking for a quiet home in an apartment or a house with full access to the ground floor, where he will have a warm bed, peace and a stable environment. He is a dog who no longer needs great adventures - he will most appreciate silence, routine, good food and a person who will respect his pace and need for rest.

Rafy je psí senior, starý pánko so svojimi náladami – a úprimne, kto by ich v tomto veku nemal. So psami aj fenkami vychádza podľa sympatií – neprekáža mu ich prítomnosť, pokiaľ ho príliš neotravujú. Rafy hľadá pokojný domov v byte alebo v dome s úplným prístupom dnu, kde bude mať teplý peliešok, pokoj a stabilné prostredie.

About Rafy

What life with Rafy looks like

Rafy is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at ÚVP Košice in Slovakia.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇸🇰Adopting from Slovakia

Slovak rescue groups coordinate cross-border transport with European partners. Animals are chipped and vaccinated; sterilization is often included for adults and arranged post-adoption for puppies/kittens.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rafy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rafy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ÚVP Košice handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rafy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rafy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ÚVP Košice will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rafy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rafy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ÚVP Košice early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rafy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (SK). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
