Ragnar

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Young · 3 years

Ragnar came to us as an intake dog at 11 months old from a previous owner who could no longer keep him due to lack of space. Despite his still young age and the significant and sudden change in his life, Ragnar has managed the shelter routine relatively calmly and confidently. He is not easily upset by the other dogs and prefers to lie quietly on his cozy blanket, waiting patiently for his primary caregiver to have time to pet him, especially behind his ears. He comments on this with complete relaxation, even taking a nap. He also enjoys running and playing on a securely fenced outdoor area. He would also be happy about small games where he can use his nose. Ragnar also wants to please and shows an exceptional willingness to learn when it comes to basic obedience. If there’s still some play with food, the better. However, it should not be overlooked that he is a nearly 40kg American Staffordshire male dog who has spent more time in the animal shelter than in a real home. Therefore, there is still much to learn about rules and boundaries in a home. His new owners should be sovereign, clear, and structured in their handling and training with him. Additionally, we would like to have neither other animals nor children around, as Ragnar can quickly build up a lot of energy with too much dynamism. Rearing experience is desirable but not necessary, provided we and Ragnar are convinced that it can work. Since Ragnar is an American Staffordshire Terrier, which is listed as a restricted breed, his future owners will need both a kennel permit and a breed knowledge test. We are happy to provide advice in this regard. We are delighted about numerous applications for our handsome fellow.

About Ragnar

What life with Ragnar looks like

Ragnar is a young adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ragnar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ragnar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ragnar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ragnar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ragnar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ragnar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ragnar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
