Adopt Rami

Shih Tzu · Female · Senior · 10 years

Rami is a 11-year-old Shih Tzu who came to our animal shelter after her owner passed away. Due to these difficult circumstances, a new home had to be found for her. Rami is a dog with a clear character. In her previous home, she did not always know the right structure and boundaries, which sometimes makes her tend to "demand" things from people. When she becomes jealous or feels she needs to share attention, she can become aggressive. Therefore, we are looking for an owner who can handle Rami calmly, consistently, and clearly. With the right guidance and clear boundaries, Rami can adapt well and her nice side will shine through. Outside, Rami is a real walking enthusiast. She visibly enjoys her walks and likes to go out. Going out with her owner is very enjoyable for her. She can also stay at home, but this needs to be built up slowly in a new environment. At first, she may bark a bit when left alone, but with a good buildup and a clear routine, she can definitely get used to it. Rami is therefore a dog that thrives best with people who can offer her clear structure, calmness, and boundaries. When she gets that support, she can be a very pleasant and loyal companion. Without that guidance, she will quickly take charge, which is actually only confusing for her. When she arrived at the animal shelter, Rami's teeth were not in good condition. She has already seen our veterinarian and her teeth have been treated, so she can now be comfortable again. We hope to find a warm home for Rami where she can regain rest, clarity, and affection, so she can spend many more beautiful years with a loving family.

About Rami

What life with Rami looks like

Rami is a small senior shih tzu dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rami, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rami?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rami on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rami if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rami already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rami isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rami and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
