Adopt Raya

Presa Canario · Female · Adult · 5 years

Raya is a breed-standard Presa Canario female dog, born on 12.07.2020. She came to us via another animal shelter and the responsible authorities after a biting incident occurred at her former foster home. In a situation with an open front door, Raya left the property and bit a passerby. Due to this incident, she is currently classified as dangerous. In our daily life, Raya presents herself as a self-assured, vigilant female dog with clear boundaries. She is initially skeptical of strangers and does not like overbearing touches. She especially needs more time to build trust with men. However, with her trusted people – since we met her in October 2025 – she is absolutely reliable, cuddly, patient, and cooperative. On walks, Raya is a pleasant companion. She walks well on the leash and is generally stable in her environment, as long as her person remains attentive and signals early that she does not need to take on any tasks. In such cases, encounters with cyclists, joggers, strollers, other dogs, or everyday stimuli are no problem. If she is not picked up in time in a situation and begins to fixate, she can pull on the leash but can still be easily interrupted and guided. The training so far with an experienced trainer is something Raya handles very well. She shows that she can remain calm and composed "just being there" without needing to constantly act. Other dogs, regardless of size or demeanor, she can reliably ignore once it's clear that she has no responsibility for them. At the same time, Raya is self-assured and cannot be intimidated or bullied, which also becomes evident in her interactions with confident male dogs in the run.

About Raya

What life with Raya looks like

Raya is a adult presa canario dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen/Rheim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Raya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Raya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigshafen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Raya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Raya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigshafen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Raya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Raya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigshafen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Raya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
