Red

American Staffordshire Terrier · Male · Adult · 7 years

Red is a very insecure boy who still has a lot to learn and discover. He reacts very suspiciously to new things, loudly barking at strangers and jumping on the leash. He still needs a lot of help and support there. He is very sensitive and immediately notices when a person is unsure of him. Several introductory appointments with plenty of time are needed so that Red can get used to new people at his own pace. He chooses his people. Those he fully accepts, he gives his trust and affection. No children and cats should be in the same household, with congeners, the sympathy is decisive. Outdoors, he can still learn to be more relaxed, he can already handle many stimuli well, but he can be irritated or unsettled more easily depending on his mood. Outdoor dog encounters work well when Red has enough distance from them. He likes to play very much, but it can happen that he is full of the house typical of his breed and it is difficult for him to calm down again. Red is a very smart little guy and always tries his best to learn. Unfortunately, he has food allergies and also gets medication for it. Which dog owners are we looking for for Red: Only experienced people who are familiar with challenging dogs and their special needs are being mediated. No children and cats may be present in the new home. You need a lot of patience, time and understanding for the insecure male dog. The new owners should be interested in dog school and training. Willingness to work with a muzzle. A lot of time and understanding to work with him on his fears. Please note that his breed, the American Staffordshire Terrier, may only be kept with restrictions in certain cantons of Switzerland or even a ban on keeping it. Has Red piqued your interest? You are welcome to contact us for an introduction. Rasse: American Staffordshire-Terrier Farbe: Braun-Weiss Alter: 13. About Red

What life with Red looks like

Red is a medium-sized adult american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at Berner Tierzentrum in Switzerland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Red, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Red?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Berner Tierzentrum handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Red on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Red if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Berner Tierzentrum will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Red already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Red isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Berner Tierzentrum early rather than rehoming privately; they know Red and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
