Adopt Red

American Staffordshire Terrier · Male · Adult · 6 years

Red is a very insecure young boy who still has much to learn and discover. He reacts very suspiciously to new things, barking loudly at strangers and jumping on the leash. He still needs a lot of help and support. He is very sensitive and immediately notices if someone is insecure around him. Outside, he still needs to learn to be more relaxed, as he can already handle many distractions, but can be more easily irritated or unsettled depending on his mood. Dog encounters outside work well as long as Red has enough distance from them. He seeks out his people deliberately. Those he fully accepts, he trusts and shows his affection to. He loves to play, but can sometimes be typical of his breed, getting very excited and finding it hard to calm down. Red is a very clever fellow and always tries his best to learn. Unfortunately, he has food allergies and takes medication for them. There should be no children or cats in the same household, and the sympathy of fellow animals is crucial. Red is currently at the animal shelter Paradiesli. If you are interested or have any questions about Red, please contact the animal shelter directly.

About Red

What life with Red looks like

Red is a large adult american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at Hilf dem Tier in Hilf Dem Tier.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Red, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Red?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hilf dem Tier handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Red on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Red if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hilf dem Tier will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Red already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Red isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hilf dem Tier early rather than rehoming privately; they know Red and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
