Ricardo

Mixed Breed · Male

Ricardo and his two siblings Rosa and Ronaldo had no easy start in life. Found very young, the three Bardiño mixes were alone and abandoned - emaciated, completely covered in ticks and terribly anxious. Ricardo, in particular, had a deep-seated fear of people. If a person entered the enclosure, Ricardo would immediately disappear into his hiding place. Even when he eventually stopped hiding, he still didn't want to make physical contact for a long time. He simply needed more time than his siblings to understand that people meant him no harm. But Ricardo showed what a small fighter he was. He now comes to people on his own, seeks contact and enjoys petting. Sometimes he is still a bit cautious and submits quickly, but from the little dog who only wanted to hide, a curious and people-oriented young dog has emerged. Ricardo is still the most cautious of the three siblings. In new situations, he sometimes needs a moment to calmly observe everything and gain trust. If you give him this time, he always surprises with how bravely he masters new challenges. Ricardo gets along very well with other dogs. He loves to play and romp with his siblings, but also respects the boundaries of older dogs. He can accept a clear command problem-free. Even at the vet, Ricardo behaves exemplary, and car rides in the transport box are no problem for him. Ricardo needs people who do not expect him to become a self-confident daredevil overnight. People who give him time, convey security and are happy about every small progress. Because anyone who watches Ricardo grow up experiences something very special: how a timid little puppy becomes a happy dog who trusts his humans more and more. We assume that the puppies are Bardiño mixes - a precise confirmation is unfortunately not available. Bardiños are among the herding dogs of the Canary Islands and are used there as herding, guarding and companion dogs. This pronounced protective instinct should be taken into account and not underestimated when adopting. However, once you have gained the trust and love of a Bardiño, you will receive a loyal and faithful friend for life. That's why we are looking for Bardiño breed experts who can guide him consistently. Ideally, his new home should be located in a rural area and preferably have a fenced property/garden. Due to the distinctive head shape of the puppies, we have had an accredited genetic test for breed determination carried out as a precaution to exclude a possible listing dog share. The test showed no evidence of corresponding breeds in the genetic makeup, so there is nothing in the way of his entry into Germany for this reason. Ricardo can travel to his new home around mid-September 2026, chipped, fully vaccinated and tested for Mediterranean diseases. Who would like to give Ricardo security?

About Ricardo

What life with Ricardo looks like

Ricardo is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Fuerteventura in Dransfeld.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ricardo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ricardo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Fuerteventura handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ricardo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ricardo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Fuerteventura will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ricardo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ricardo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Fuerteventura early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ricardo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
