Adopt Rik

Male · Adult · 5 years

Rik is ready to become a loyal, loving companion for adopters who have the time and enthusiasm to include him in their daily lives. Whether it’s heading out on new adventures, practising his training, or joining you for a quiet pub-lunch (he’s a fan of the cosy corner spots!), Rik will be right by your side. True to his clever nature, Rik has a cheeky streak—he’s been known to pinch a tissue or two or sneak a snack from the counter! But with consistent guidance, he’s learning great manners and continues to improve as he understands his boundaries. Please note: If you already have an open adoption application and are interested in knowing if Rik is a match, please let us know you are interested in him by emailing us on . Appointment slots are available from 12 - 5.30pm on Monday - Friday. Rik is an incredibly endearing five-year-old German Shepherd with both brains and charm in abundance. He’s a bright, fun-loving boy who adores spending time with his favourite people—especially if it involves learning something new. Training sessions are one of his favourite ways to bond, and he’s already mastered an impressive list of tricks. Rik would love to continue his learning journey with adopters who enjoy positive, reward-based training. While Rik’s heart is full of love for his humans, he can be a little sensitive at times, so he needs people who will take a calm and gentle approach to building trust. He’ll thrive in a home with adopters who can advocate for his space is strangers wish to say hello and ask them to greet him calmly. Rik could live with confident, secondary school–aged children who know how to behave calmly around dogs. He can become a bit vocal around other dogs when he’s on lead—mostly out of frustration—but with the fun training he’s been practising; he’s improving every day. He enjoys socialising with well-matched canine friends on walks but would like to be the only pet in his home. Because Rik can be startled by busy traffic, motorbikes, and scooters, he’s hoping for a home where countryside walks and peaceful beach strolls can become part of his routine. A secure garden of his own is essential so he can play and relax to his hearts content.

About Rik

What life with Rik looks like

Rik is a adult dog waiting at Dogs Trust Shoreham in Shoreham by Sea.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rik, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rik?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Shoreham handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rik on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rik if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Shoreham will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rik already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rik isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Shoreham early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rik and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
