Adopt Rocky

Jack Russell Terrier · Male · Senior · 10 years

Rocky is a 10-year-old Jack Russell-mixed breed who was taken in by us at the animal shelter in November. His surrender occurred because his care could no longer be assured. He had bitten both his caregiver and his owner, which complicated the situation. His original owners had initially wanted to keep him but would have had to place him during the day with the caregiver. Since this was not possible, his previous home reluctantly decided to surrender him to provide him with a better environment and to avoid long periods of loneliness. Rocky is generally a friendly and well-trained dog. In his previous home, he was often allowed to walk without a leash because he has a reliable recall. However, it seems that he has enjoyed many freedoms, which can be problematic in certain situations. So, when subjected to mandatory measures like being leashed or put into a coat, Rocky shows high tension. He becomes stiff and tense, and his behavior can be interpreted as a precursor to a possible bite. Even during vet visits, caution is advised as he shows a very defensive attitude and a muzzle is required. With other dogs, Rocky is generally compatible. He prefers female dogs and gets along well with neutered male dogs. At the animal shelter, he initially lived with two female dogs, which have since been rehomed. Currently, Rocky lives alone as we have not yet found a suitable companion for him. Rocky is very agile and active for his age. However, he requires clear rules and consistent leadership. Without this, he tends to make his own decisions, which can lead to problematic behavior, such as mouthing. So far, this has not happened here as we are experienced in handling dogs and can read his behavior. Rocky is looking for a dog-experienced home that can provide him with the necessary structure and security. With clear leadership and a calm, stable environment, he has the potential to be a wonderful companion.

About Rocky

What life with Rocky looks like

Rocky is a senior jack russell terrier dog waiting at BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rocky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rocky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rocky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rocky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rocky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rocky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rocky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
