Rocky

Pit Bull Terrier · Male · Adult · 7 years

Rocky is a neutered Pit Bull male dog from 2019. The handsome fellow unfortunately had a lot of bad luck in his short life, making him an extreme problem dog! He was dropped off at the animal shelter as a "found dog" with a muzzle. Due to a bad start in life and appropriate handling, he generally mistrusts people and defends everything – even a shred of his blanket… which brings us to his next problem: he destroys objects very much and gets so engrossed that he doesn’t notice when he hurts himself. For him, there is no possibility of calming down on his own; only when the object is gone can he relax again. Due to deprivation injuries, he needs a very structured, quiet daily routine. Additionally, he knows exactly when he is wearing a muzzle and can do nothing, and when he is capable of action, which makes training and handling more challenging. We have given Rocky a lot of time and patience, and now he actually shows some social positive behavior and is trying to offer desired behavior! In everyday life, he is a bit more relaxed, and small deviations from the routine no longer throw him off for days. Sometimes he can already really enjoy cuddles. Despite this, he must always be led with a muzzle in human contact and cannot be kept in the household but requires a separate area. Walks with him are relatively problem-free, as he has good basic obedience and usually doesn’t have issues with female dogs either. Since he defends every resource, no large animals or children should live in the new home. We are looking for true dog professionals who can foster Rocky’s "good core" but are aware that Rocky will likely never be a "normal" dog and requires special handling. Rocky is, of course, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and has an EU passport. Rocky is currently housed in a kennel. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

DE·Show original

About Rocky

What life with Rocky looks like

Rocky is a large adult pit bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Mülheim in Mülheim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rocky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rocky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Mülheim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rocky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rocky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Mülheim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rocky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rocky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Mülheim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rocky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
