Vito

English Bulldog · Male · Senior · 12 years

Vito is one of our long-term residents and has been waiting for a home since 2016. Originally found in Mülheim, Vito could be rehomed twice, but always came back after a few days because he believed each time that his mistress belonged to him completely and showed very possessive behavior toward his partner. Here at the animal shelter, he prefers to bond with a primary caregiver. Vito’s problems are that he displays a pronounced prey-catching behavior toward cars, bicycles (anything that rolls), if allowed. His frustration tolerance was also quite low at first. When he had to wait, Vito became frustrated and acted aggressively toward people. This has improved significantly with dog training classes, and he is eager to learn and very willing to obey. A little studious one. It’s becoming clear that Vito is getting older, he has become more calm overall, but he still occasionally chases a knuckle or two, which doesn’t bother him, he still goes for long walks or runs around in the run. We are looking for a home for Vito with people without children who do not live in a multi-family home. He wouldn’t mind living with a nice female dog. Interested parties should gradually become friends with Vito and take advice from his animal caregiver and dog trainer. Vito is classified as dangerous, he does not have the option to be freed from the muzzle and leash requirement. For more information on the Landeshundegesetz NRW, visit www.muelheim-ruhr.

About Vito

What life with Vito looks like

Vito is a medium-sized senior english bulldog dog waiting at Tierheim Mülheim in Mülheim.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Vito, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Vito?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Mülheim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Vito on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Vito if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Mülheim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Vito already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Vito isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Mülheim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Vito and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
