Roo

Whippet · Male · Young · 2 years

Once Roo knows you, he loves a fuss and being close to his favourite people. He’s a playful boy who enjoys his toys and a good game of tug, and he already knows some tricks. Food is a great way to make friends with him, and he’s keen to keep learning! Watching Roo’s personality emerge has been such a pleasure. He’s becoming braver about meeting people, and those first cautious introductions now lead to friendships full of affection and fun. Give him time to get to know you and you’ll discover why his carers think so much of him. He’s housetrained and has settled when left for around five to six hours in his foster home, although time alone will need to be built up gradually as he settles into a new home. We’re so happy Roo is ready for this next chapter, and we can’t wait for him to have a family of his own to share his toys, his adventures and all that affection with. Roo is a sweet, sensitive Lurcher who has well and truly stolen our hearts! After a challenging start, he has shown so much courage as he learns that the world has good things to offer. Roo is now ready for his forever home, with patient adopters who will help him continue growing in confidence. He’s looking for a quiet household with few visitors, and he’ll need to be the only dog. New people, unfamiliar dogs and busy places can worry Roo, so he’ll need peaceful walking routes. He travels well in the car, making it easy to reach quieter spots for his adventures. Starting with familiar routes will help him feel secure before gradually exploring further afield. Roo needs to wear a muzzle and stay on lead in public, so a secure garden would give him somewhere to enjoy a run and play. Roo has been learning to go to his crate when someone knocks, and his new family will need to continue this training and prevent direct access to the front door. They’ll also need to continue helping him feel more comfortable with handling and vet visits. Our behaviour team will support his adopters throughout the rehoming process, helping them get to know Roo and build on everything he’s learnt.

About Roo

What life with Roo looks like

Roo is a young adult whippet dog waiting at Dogs Trust Darlington in Sadberge.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Roo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Roo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Darlington handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Roo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Roo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Darlington will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Roo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Roo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Darlington early rather than rehoming privately; they know Roo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
