Royal

Male · Young · 2 years

Royal is a very special Chow Chow who has come to us from a breeder in search of his forever home. When he first arrived, he was extremely frightened of the world around him and was very wary of being touched or handled. Thanks to gentle care and patience, Royal has made incredible progress and is continuing to blossom in foster, where he is experiencing home life for the very first time. Royal has exceeded all expectations with how well he has settled into foster. He has been an absolute superstar, sleeping soundly through the night, travelling well in the car, walking beautifully on lead and has even been completely clean in the house. Every day brings a new milestone, and it has been a joy to watch his confidence grow as he discovers all the comforts and pleasures of family life. Although Royal is still nervous of people initially, he so desperately wants to trust and tries his hardest to be brave. He has begun asking his foster carers for gentle neck and bum scratches, happily takes treats from their hands, enjoys rummaging through the toy box, has found his little voice and now greets them with his wonderful wagging tail. He is such a sweet, gentle soul who simply needs time to work things out at his own pace. Royal absolutely relies on the resident female dogs in foster for confidence and reassurance. He watches their every move, learning how to be part of a family, and loves playing alongside them. He will need to share his forever home with at least one kind, confident female dog who enjoys a good play and can continue to show him the way. He cannot live with cats. As this is Royal's first experience of living in a home, he thrives on routine and will need patient, understanding adopters who will allow him to settle without pressure. He has made remarkable progress already, but he is still very nervous of the unknown and benefits from people who understand that he needs time to process new experiences. A calm, rural or quiet home would suit him best, as he is currently worried by traffic. He is looking for an adult-only home with breed experience and experience with very nervous rescue dogs would be highly beneficial. Royal has recently had a bath and full groom at the rescue and was an absolute gentleman throughout. As a Chow Chow, his beautiful coat will require regular daily grooming. He is very tolerant of being brushed when it is introduced slowly, little and often, and this has become an important part of his routine. Royal is an incredibly special boy who has embraced this new chapter in his life with quiet bravery. With patience, kindness and the continued support of confident canine companions, he will become a wonderfully loyal and loving companion. Watching him continue to discover the world and grow in confidence will be an incredibly rewarding journey, and he is sure to make his forever family smile every single day. This dog can be homed with a resident dog.

About Royal

What life with Royal looks like

Royal is a large young adult dog waiting at Many Tears Animal Rescue in Llanelli.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires female resident dog for confidence, never lived in home before, needs house training, extremely nervous with new people

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Royal, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Royal?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Many Tears Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Royal on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Royal if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Many Tears Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Royal already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Royal isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Many Tears Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Royal and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
