Saku

Labrador Retriever · Male · Young · 2 years

Saku is a young, energetic dog who was originally adopted from abroad. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that his previous home was not the right match for his character and needs. Therefore, he is now looking for a new chance – one where he will receive the guidance he deserves. Saku is a confident dog with a strong character. He needs clear structure, consistent guidance, and owners who know how to handle this. A focused training is essential for him, so he can grow into a stable and nice adult dog. He is a mixed breed with a Labrador Retriever, which translates into his enthusiasm and energy. Saku likes to be active and enjoys going for walks or adventures. He enjoys being on the move together and needs sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. For Saku, we are looking for a home with experience, where people are willing to invest time and energy in him. People who can guide him, set boundaries, and help him fully realize his potential. 💛 Are you the experienced dog owner that Saku needs?

NL·Show original

About Saku

What life with Saku looks like

Saku is a large young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Saku, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Saku?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Saku on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Saku if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Saku already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Saku isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Saku and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
