Salo

Romanian Shepherd · Unknown · Senior · 16 years

Salo is a beautiful, young male. Salo originally comes from abroad and likely did not have much exposure in his early months of life. He is initially skeptical towards new people and barks at them, but he warms up quickly and initiates contact on his own. People he trusts can pet him, and he greatly enjoys their attention and affection. On his walks, he likes to be accompanied by other fellow animals, as they provide him with a sense of security. He also likes to invite them to play. Some environmental stimuli still make him uneasy, but since being at the animal shelter, he has made great progress every day. During walks, he sometimes shows that he can be quite close and jumps on his primary caregiver. Salo tends to place a high value on resources such as food, resting spots, or toys. Due to his breed, he is prone to developing protective instincts. His new humans should be willing to work together with Salo to set the course for his future life in a positive direction. As a young herding dog, Salo wishes for confident people who can work with him on an equal footing and who understand, appreciate, and can handle the traits of a herding dog. Salo has a good sense for human insecurity. If he lacks a clear set of rules and feels superior, he may question his counterpart and try to establish his own rules. Salo likes to test boundaries, he tears and plays, and craves stability from his humans. Any children in the household should be at least 16 years old. Salos' new family should have experience with herding dogs and not be opposed to using a muzzle (he is already familiar with one). Salo is outside the home; you can find him on Instagram under "thebigfootway_," where he is called Rabbit. If interested, we look forward to a detailed email with your phone number.

DE·Show original

About Salo

What life with Salo looks like

Salo is a senior romanian shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Troisdorf in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Salo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Salo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Troisdorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Salo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Salo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Troisdorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Salo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Salo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Troisdorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Salo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
