Adopt Zuma

Romanian Shepherd · Female · Senior · 11 years

Zuma carries a heavy past with her. In 2019, she was found in Nasăud, Romania, with a wire around her neck. It is likely that she had been chained or deliberately inflicted pain upon her. Wounded, frightened, and completely on her own, she had hidden in fear of further suffering. Since then, Zuma has lived in the animal shelter. Seven long years of waiting—yet she has never completely given up. Zuma is a very sensitive, reserved female dog who needs time to build trust. She remains cautious around people. Touches are currently barely tolerable for her. When people enter her pen, she often remains motionless and tries to become invisible. And yet, one can recognize small, quiet signs of hope: she observes her fellow animals attentively and closely follows their behavior. With much patience, calmness, and a confident second dog by her side, Zuma can begin to learn the world anew. She is smart and attentive—but she needs people with hearts, experience, and great empathy who do not expect anything from her and give her the time she needs. Unfortunately, Zuma’s fur is currently heavily tangled. Since proximity is still difficult for her, regular fur care in the stressful shelter environment is hardly possible. Therefore, a complete shave would be urgently necessary so that she can then slowly and gently begin to build positive associations with fur care. This time, calmness, and individual care are completely lacking in the animal shelter.

About Zuma

What life with Zuma looks like

Zuma is a large senior romanian shepherd dog waiting at Arme Hundeseelen in Năsăud.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇷🇴Adopting from Romania

Romanian rescues handle the highest volume of cross-border adoptions in the EU. Animals are quarantined and fully vetted before transport. Reputable rescues maintain detailed health records and post-adoption follow-up.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zuma, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zuma?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Arme Hundeseelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zuma on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zuma if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Arme Hundeseelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zuma already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zuma isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Arme Hundeseelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zuma and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
