Sam

Poodle · Male · Senior · 14 years

About SamSam is a lovely little fella who came to the centre as his previous owners could sadly no longer keep him. Sam is currently being fostered by a member of staff as he is too old to be in the kennels. He is happily living with 4 other dogs and a cat, he gets on very well with them all. Sam is a very affectionate boy and never really leaves your side, he will absolutely need adopters who are willing to let him sit on their knee, curl up with them on the sofa and sleep on the bed. This is what he has been used to for 14 years so we do not want to try and change that at his age. He is a little deaf now so will need understanding adopters. Sam is very good in the house, he sleeps of the time but does still enjoy getting out and about for a walk. He walks well on the lead and is just a joy to be around. Sam is fully housetrained and does not chew. Sam does not like being left on his own at all, he gets very anxious and becomes quite vocal so we are looking for a family who will not leave him on his own. He is much more relaxed when he has other dogs to keep him company so we would prefer him to be adopted where there is an existing dog already in the home. Sam really is a smashing, happy and loving little lad who will make such a loving friend for his new family. He is suitable to live with other compatible dogs, cats and children aged 14 years and over.

About Sam

What life with Sam looks like

Sam is a senior poodle dog waiting at RSPCA York Animal Home in York.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sam, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sam?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA York Animal Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sam on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sam if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA York Animal Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sam already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sam isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA York Animal Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sam and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
