Sammy

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Sammy is looking for a home with loving and active adopters who can take him on sniffy adventures, who will take the time to help him settle in and give him all the love and attention he deserves. He is a friendly bean who could live with primary school children who are comfortable around a larger, playful dog, who will play with him nicely and will give him space to rest when needed. Sammy likes all of the attention to himself, so is looking to be the only pet in the home, he would benefit from having friendly and calm walking buddies who will help him learn to socialise with other dogs in a polite way. Sammy is a clever guy and already has some training under his belt, he does a lovely “sit”, “down” and “stay”, he is eager to engage in training in short, sweet sessions as long as a tasty treat is on offer, especially a carrot, those are his favourite. He would like a home with a private or communal, secure garden for him to potter about in at his leisure, although this is not a necessity. Sammy can settle nicely in the home, so could be left for up to 4 hours, leaving time would need to be built up slowly once he has had time to settle into his new home. Sammy will need to meet his adopters a few times prior to going home so please bear all of this in mind when applying. Please note that should you be shortlisted, our rehoming process usually takes up to 7 days, and potential adopters would be required to come up to the centre to meet him within 48hrs of being shortlisted. Sweet ball of fluff Sammy is an 8 year old crossbreed who despite his age has lots of love and life still in him. He is not super interested in toys, preferring to go out exploring and sniffing on his walks, although he is not a fan of puddles so is happy to curl up and snuggle on rainy days. He loves a fuss, bum scratches are his favourite, he will scooch back into your hand for more. He adores meeting new people and expects them all to greet him with fusses and attention. This super happy boy is ready to find his new home.

About Sammy

What life with Sammy looks like

Sammy is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Dogs Trust Canterbury in Chestfield.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sammy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sammy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Canterbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sammy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sammy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Canterbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sammy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sammy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Canterbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sammy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
