Sapfo

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 4 months

Sapfo, a female puppy, born approximately February 2022, shoulder height around 58-60 cm, weight around 25-30 kg, is looking for a forever home. Sapfo has had a difficult start in life. She lived with her two sisters for years in a relatively isolated animal shelter, without the opportunity to experience the life that every dog deserves. It is all the more impressive that she is already making progress. Of the three sisters, Sapfo is currently the only one that can be touched. The beautiful puppy is cautious, curious, observes her humans carefully, and is slowly building trust. It is clear that she would like to be bolder - she simply lacks the experience that the world can also have beautiful sides. Sapfo is already surprisingly well on a leash on the grounds of our partner animal shelter and is developing further every day. However, outside her familiar environment, she will probably need a lot of time. New situations, unfamiliar noises and the big wide world will initially certainly unsettle her and should therefore be shown to her in small, positive steps. Sapfo currently reacts very loudly to dogs passing by at the kennel fence. However, we suspect that this behavior is mainly due to uncertainty, frustration, lack of exercise and the stressful animal shelter situation. With sufficient distance, rest and a structured daily routine, this behavior may change, but her future owners should be willing to work with her and teach her all the important things for more security. Sapfo also currently weighs a few kilos too much. Here too, we are confident that her weight will gradually regulate with regular exercise, an adapted diet and an active daily routine. We wish Sapfo a quiet, preferably rural home with dog-experienced people who are aware of the responsibility of showing the world to an insecure dog. People who do not expect rapid progress, but are willing to give her the time she needs with patience, understanding and loving consistency. We do not mediate in very urban living situations or in families with small children. Please only submit an adoption request if the takeover is possible at the time mentioned in the text & you have already discussed the adoption of a new family member with your family (if necessary, other involved persons such as employer, landlord, interim care). Please note that the dogs described here are currently in their large-scale care or in the animal shelter in a limited, safe environment and have little contact with other people or environmental stimuli outside the property. The descriptions are based on the behavior in this familiar environment. Especially puppies and young dogs are still in the development of their character. For a successful settling in a new home, they need time, patience and loving guidance to get used to the new environment and the various stimuli and grow into secure dogs.

About Sapfo

What life with Sapfo looks like

Sapfo is a large puppy mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sapfo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sapfo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sapfo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sapfo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Sapfo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sapfo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sapfo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
