Adopt Schoko

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 11 years

The chocolate-colored colt is actually named "Swiss Chocolate" and suffered from a sprang abscess on his left hind leg as a foal. This led to a muscle inflammation and, unfortunately, to a muscle atrophy, causing Schoko to become "goose-stepped," meaning his hind leg shoots forward uncontrollably with every step. Although Schoko is still conditionally rideable, the risk of overexertion is very high. For the young colt always tries to do everything right, making him predestined to be "ruined by a bad rider" if he falls into the wrong hands. Schoko belonged to a rider who tragically suffered a brain hemorrhage. Her partner then wanted to sell Schoko to the butcher immediately. Franzi, a stablemate, fortunately prevented this by taking Schoko in at the slaughter price. In June 2015, she gifted the five-year-old Schoko to Tierschutzengel and he moved into the foster home Sonsbeck am Niederrhein. There, he lives with Monsun, a colt who is partially blind in one eye. The owners of Monsun also accommodate Schoko appropriately, as he now clearly expresses that he is not suited for work as a retired horse. For he has already started to "handiwork" in the stable. The open stable complex includes 3 hectares of pasture and two large paddocks, providing ample freedom of movement. However, at five years old, horses are often still in their prime and very adventurous.

Bewegungsfreiheit gibt es also wirklich genügend.

About Schoko

What life with Schoko looks like

Schoko is a medium-sized senior mixed breed horse waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Schoko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Schoko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Schoko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Schoko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Schoko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Schoko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Schoko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
