Shiwas

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Shiwas lives in a pension in Patras, Greece. VIDEOS AVAILABLE male dog/neutered. Born around February 2018. Size: approx. 60 cm. Update 27.10.2024: Shiwas would love to have his own home with a soft dog bed and lots of love!! Update 27.10.2024: Our colleagues report on Shiwas: Shiwas is a real sight at 60cm! Here, fans of large dogs are sought. Shiwas is a herding dog mix and requires dog-experienced people. Herding dogs are independent personalities that require the owner to have consistency and empathy and the ability to deal with an intelligent, independent, large dog. A rural home would be advantageous for Shiwas. WHAT HAS HAPPENED UNTIL NOW: Shiwas found his way to us via a help request on Facebook. The male dog had been hanging out in front of a café in Patras for days in the cold and rain. His health condition was obviously quite bad. Maria saw the call, and so the male dog was taken off the street and brought to the vet. Shiwas had severe pain, which the doctors diagnosed as a serious ear infection, which was treated directly. Unfortunately, the medications did not work, and the ears were cleaned multiple times without success. The last hope for improvement was a specialist clinic in Athens, and indeed, there, Shiwas was helped. Shiwas underwent five months of treatment under general anesthesia, as the damage was deep in the ears. The costly treatment paid off, as Shiwas finally found peace and no longer shakes his head. Shiwas has lived in a dog shelter in Patras for a long time, and the caretaker loves him very much. But of course, it doesn’t replace a real home. He likes to be spoiled with treats and also enjoys car rides. Due to his pain, he used to not let anyone touch his head and is still sensitive there. Therefore, we are looking for dog-experienced people without small children who are careful. Also, he does not enjoy vet visits after his long illness. Shiwas is already neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed. Additionally, he brings his own EU pet passport.

About Shiwas

What life with Shiwas looks like

Shiwas is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierfreunde Patras e.V. in Ratingen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shiwas, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shiwas?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierfreunde Patras e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shiwas on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shiwas if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierfreunde Patras e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Shiwas already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shiwas isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierfreunde Patras e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shiwas and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
