Skyla

Female · Young · 2 years

Skyla is a loving, calm, and playful dog with a soft personality. She is very people-oriented and enjoys being close to her owner. When she feels at ease, she shows her joyful side: she loves to play, is curious, and is open to learning new things. Skyla is looking for a quiet and stable home where she can acclimate at her own pace. She needs people who can guide her with patience, understanding, and clarity. A predictable environment, consistent routines, and a calm approach help her feel safe and confident. Because Skyla is eager to learn, she is a great dog for someone who wants to spend time practicing with her and guiding her step by step in daily life. Even staying home alone will need to be built up gradually, with lots of patience and at her own pace. For Skyla, we prefer a home without children, with people who have experience with dogs and who want to give her the time to fully blossom. She needs an owner who does not rush her but allows her to grow with love, structure, and confidence. Those who give Skyla this chance will receive a loyal and affectionate companion in return. She forms a deep bond with her people, enjoys being together, and can grow into a fantastic friend for a compassionate and patient family. This animal is not suitable for homes with children.

NL·Show original

About Skyla

What life with Skyla looks like

Skyla is a large young adult dog waiting at Dierenbescherming Mechelen in Mechelen.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Skyla, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Skyla?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenbescherming Mechelen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Skyla on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Skyla if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenbescherming Mechelen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Skyla already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Skyla isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenbescherming Mechelen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Skyla and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
