Adopt Slinky

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Weight: 6.5 kg Shoulder height: ~ 30 cm Slinky is a small phenomenon. The clever, lively, but also very sensitive little man chooses his humans entirely on his own. Some people are not to his liking at all, and he even bites into the pant leg while passing by, and is hard or even impossible to change his mind. Also, strangers who just want to touch him are not his thing, which he will possibly let them know with a snap, should one not recognize or ignore his previous signals. Good knowledge of canine body language and enough empathy to understand Slinky's peculiarities are essential for his new humans. Slinky is not suitable for beginners or households with children or generally a lot of commotion and visitors. With people he likes, Slinky is affectionate, as long as they don't have anything "creepy" in mind, such as cleaning ears or something similarly disgusting, which requires him to be held. Then we also have to secure him with a muzzle. He likes gentle cuddles, is very attentive, and follows us closely, and one can work well with him especially using treats. Slinky has a disability in the form of mild motor disorders. He sometimes makes spreading movements with his legs and needs more time than many fellow animals for certain movements or reactions (e.g., quick direction changes during play with other dogs). Slinky has undergone several veterinary examinations and was also assessed by a specialist veterinarian for neurology. We cannot name a "definite" cause so far. His daily life can be managed almost without problems with these disorders, as long as there is no clear worsening. The degree of this particularity has remained unchanged since his arrival with us in summer 2024. Slinky gets along well with fellow animals in the animal shelter. He just doesn't like to be pressured and will not let his butter be taken from his bread in case of doubt. Dogs that are physically superior to him and take advantage of it should not be given to him. Slinky generally enjoys walking and usually walks beside or behind the person on the leash. However, he sometimes has days when he has less interest in long walks, especially if feeding time is approaching. That would be almost suicidal to get too far away. ;) Slinky is very greedy. He likes to run with his buddy over the dog area and does small jumps in the air. Being alone after an acclimatization period will probably be okay for Slinky. However, he tends to be typical of a terrier for a louder environment. He doesn't destroy things in our animal shelter. Housebreaking still needs to be practiced, as he often marks in his room. This could also be triggered by the many other dogs around him. In the car, Slinky travels well, but excitedly. Slinky came to us as a stray dog (Bulgarian chip number), after he had been running around in a community in the surrounding area without a master and panic-stricken. Please write us an email if you are interested, including your phone number and a short description of yourself.

About Slinky

What life with Slinky looks like

Slinky is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Slinky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Slinky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Slinky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Slinky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Slinky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Slinky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Slinky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
